Hawkeye Downs Launches 92nd Season with New Focus

“Big-Picture” Excitement for Racing and Beyond

Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Hawkeye Downs Speedway and Expo Center, Eastern Iowa’s premiere racing and leading quality entertainment venue is characterizing its new racing season as one of great changes, fresh focus and renewed energy as a community asset for residents and visitors. This Friday night May 5th marks the official opening of the season.

Josh Moore, President of the Board of Directors, said the board members and staff reevaluated the support and opportunities for the facility, including seeking input and listening to the community. “We now have a rejuvenated and exciting approach in the works with fresh enthusiasm from the board, our team, the city, our wonderful fans, families and new friends – all of us excited about the potential of 90 acres known as Hawkeye Downs.”

Ann Poe, recently appointed Executive Director of Hawkeye Downs said, “The momentum is here and growing for this unique, wide-ranging place to enjoy, to experience new, fun and exciting events and activities – in racing and beyond racing. We’re not doing things in the same way. We’ve got a new attitude, new spirit and new, fantastic plans.”  Poe said there have already been significant improvements with more in the works, including, aesthetic, facility and grounds improvements, renovations, a brand new kid zone, new specialty novelties, new signage and, most importantly, expanded offerings, features and activities.  “With the help of strong community partners, it’s all about revitalizing our facilities and finding new and exciting opportunities for moving Hawkeye Downs forward as a robust community venue. It is so thrilling,” said Poe.

Central to the new focus is forging new relationships within the community and beyond, “but we’re also welcoming back our awesome ardent supporters who mean so much to Hawkeye Downs,” said Poe. One of those who has been most ardent is Roger Cassill, owner of Cassill Motors and father to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Landon Cassill. Cassill has supported Hawkeye Downs and local racers for years. This year, Cassill Motors will sponsor a new event: Military Night, June 16, 5:00 PM, with a Parade of Flags.

“We are thrilled to be sponsoring and supporting Hawkeye Downs wholeheartedly,” said Cassill. “We’re committed to the organization’s new focus, endeavors and efforts. We couldn’t be more proud to promote the season with sponsorship of Military Night, honoring our active and retired military personnel. ”

This Friday’s first race is “Grandparents Night” with pits opening at 4:00 PM, gates at 6:00 PM and racing beginning at 7:30 PM. The season will feature a full program of HY-VEE Racing Series heat and feature racing as Performance Concepts Big 8 Late Models, Mountain Dew Sportsmen, Anderson Automotive Hobby Stocks, Miller Time Hornets, and Dublin City Pub INEX Legend Cars will take to the track for their first points events of the season. Hawkeye Downs Speedway is pleased to continue its affiliation with the Lil’ Racer Car Club in 2017.

Five big divisions will battle on the quarter-mile and the half-mile asphalt ovals in 2017. Hawkeye Downs/Big 8 Late models, Sportsmen, Hobby Stocks, Hornets and INEX Legends each Friday night until August 18th.
