(Cedar Rapids,IA July 22, 2016)—Fans and racers alike endured a brutal heat index at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night but were rewarded with some hot racing to accompany the temperatures on Casey’s General Stores Wall of Fame Night.

The 2016 class of the Hawkeye Downs Wall of Fame was also inducted Friday night on the front stretch during Intermission. This years’ inductees joining an already prestigious list from past years were Dick Hutcherson, Ron Hutcherson, Jim L. Brown, Tony Dean, Arnie Juhl, and Jim Wittke.

I just wanted to take a little time to let you know how much my wife and I enjoyed our visit to Hawkeye Downs last night. We usually are at the Davenport Speedway on Fridays but we’ve wanted to try your track for some time now. When I learned it was asphalt I was even more curious.
Not knowing how long it would take us to get there, we arrived a little before 6:00. We waited until about 6:15 to enter the track. The first order of business were the restrooms and then the concession stand. We missed our usual Sloppy Joe sandwiches but your pulled pork sandwiches were very tasty. At 6:30 we were in our seats and thought we’d have an hour before we saw any action. But soon we heard the roar of engines and out came the cars for their hot laps. That kept us busy until racing started at 7:30. I’d like to say how good a job the young girl did in singing the National Anthem.
We saw some exciting heat races and feature races.
But the BEST part were the Big 8 Late Models. They were AWESOME!!! They were so fast and the sounds they made were incredible! Do they race at Hawkeye every night? I was curious if they race at other tracks in the area?
The asphalt track was great. There was no dirt flying around like it gets in Davenport. I was surprised the INEX legends had a 25 lap feature. They seem to run faster on your track than Davenport. Perhaps they are better suited for the smoother asphalt track.
I thought the whole race program was very organized and went without a hitch. The Official/Flagman was in charge. The cars got lined up smoothly after a yellow flag. Cars were ready and lined up promptly for each next race. There was a smooth transition between running the 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile. It was all handled very professionally.
We are seniors, so the price was right. Now we just have to figure out how to get on to I-380 for the trip home. We missed something and ended up on 30 going east. We eventually got onto I-80 and home safe.
Thanks for a very enjoyable night of racing, we’ll be back.

Cedar Rapids, IA June 24 2016– For the past several years, Cedar Rapids based Van Meter Inc. has hosted a night to entertain their employees at Hawkeye Downs Speedway along with sponsoring the race program for the evening.
As part of that sponsorship, they pick a charity each year and ask that fans attending make a voluntary minimum donation as their admission price for the night. This year they chose Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) as that charity with 100% of the proceeds from Friday night’s race program going to C.O.P.S. Over the past several years Van Meter Night has raised over $50,000 for various charities. Friday nights’ event would add to that total.
