July 14th Results- Casey’s General Store Night

(July 14th, 2017– By Caleb Slouha) After a week off, racing resumed at Hawkeye Downs for the Hy-Vee Racing Series which included the AIRS Vintage Cars for the second time this year.

Hawkeye Downs Speedway

Robin Atkins got a strong start to the AIRS race, but once Bart Miller made the pass to second just three laps in, he quickly caught up to the leader. With two to go, Miller took the lead, but Bobby Bryant came to a stop in turn 4 bringing out the caution. On the restart Atkins stays right in Miller’s tracks, but could not make the pass and Miller won the feature.

Drew Nickell, racing in the 2M car usually raced by Dallas Chandler, won the Miller Time Hornets feature after taking the lead from Elliott Vogel on lap 4. There would be one restart after Cody Strasser spun and Curt Gibbs was left with nowhere to go. The two made contact, ending Gibbs’ night.

In the Anderson Automotive Hobbystocks, Bryan Baxter grabbed the lead after the start and held on until Jim Hanson took the lead with 9 laps to go. Baxter would then fall back to finish 6th while Gerald Hall and Braxton Franks attempted to catch Hanson, but could not do so.

It was a frustrating night for Cole O’Brien and Sammy Smith, as they seemed to find each other the whole feature. O’Brien led in the early stages of the race with Smith on the bumper, and the top four all in contention for the lead. Dave McCalla was able to charge from fourth to first in one lap and took the lead in the Dublin City Pub Inex Legends. As O’Brien and Smith continued to battle, McCalla was able to run away with his second win of the year.

While it looked like CJ VanHorn may have had something for Cory Houdek in the Mountain Dew Sportsmen, ultimately it was Houdek who drove to victory lane once again. It was a close call for Houdek who made slight contact with Mike Mitchell when Mitchell and Ballsteadt went for a spin. Everyone could continue, Greg Hentrich was unable to finish due to an engine problem.

For the first time this season, Griffin McGrath pulled into victory lane in the Performance Concepts Late Models. McGrath made the pass on Brad Osborn on the outside, and set sail while Osborn and Gibson battled for second. Gibson won that battle and several laps later Dudley Fleck took over the third position.

Next week is KGAN/FOX 28 night at Hawkeye Downs. Gates open at 6 pm, racing begins at 7:30 pm. Join the Lil’ Racer Car Club for “Frozen Night”

This Friday night is “Hibu Night at the Races” and  the annual Racing for a Cause event benefiting Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S).  The highlight of the night is a $1000 to win Regional Qualifier for Dublin City Pub INEX Legends. The special race in conjunction with C.O.P.S.  is sponsored by Hershberger Enterprises of Kalona. 25-30 Legends are expected for this race, which is the first of four throughout Iowa.

Legends Racer Warren Ropp, organizer of the special Legends race, told The Gazette earlier this week:“ It’s big because a lot of people and organizations are all about the money on their end — and you’ve got to have the money to make the doors stay open and operate — but (Hawkeye Downs) sees the big picture of what’s happening in the communities,” Ropp said. “It helps pull communities together. Whether it’s Military Night or Iowa Donor Network Night or my C.O.P.S. night, it’s big. The only way you get that message across is to keep putting it out in front of people.”

C.O.P.S. is a national organization that was organized in 1984 with 110 individual members. Their mission is “Rebuilding the shattered lives of survivors and co-workers affected by line of duty deaths, through partnerships with law enforcement and the community.” Today they have over 37,000 members.

As a special recognition for local law enforcement, C.O.P.S. and Hershberger Enterprises have teamed up with Hawkeye Downs to offer free admission to all law enforcement officers (with proper credentials) and their immediate families for Friday nights’ race.

Hibu, the evening’s sponsor, is a multinational directories and internet services company headquartered in Reading, Berkshire, UK. It has operations in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Spain.

It’s week nine of the HyVee Racing Series as the track celebrates its 92nd season of racing as part of Hawkeye Downs Speedway and Expo Center, the premiere racing and leading entertainment destination in Eastern Iowa.

In addition to the Dublin City Pub INEX Legends, Performance Concepts Late Models, Mountain Dew Sportsmen, Anderson Automotive Hobby Stocks, and Miller Time Hornets will be action.

The Lil’ Racer Car Club is back in action Friday night as well with the “Worlds Largest Candy Dash on an Asphalt track” during Intermission.  The current record is 1,049 pounds of candy. Candy Donations can be delivered to the clubhouse under the main Grandstand before the races start.

Gates open at 6pm with Opening Ceremonies slated for 7:20 and Racing at 7:30.

Hawkeye Downs will again be using RainedOut.com in 2017 to notify fans of weather related announcements for the speedway. Sign up at RainedOut.com to receive email or text alerts.
