Hawkeye Downs Helps Houston From Own Backyard

Press Release

The devastation from hurricane Harvey has affected every one of us in some way or another. There are several ways people can get involved to help the immediate efforts, and the ongoing needs.

We here at Hawkeye Downs are all about positively engaging with our community and making sure we give back to the people that need it the most through various activities and charities. As a part of these efforts, we have teamed up with Fur Fun Rescue from Lisbon to participate in a special effort to rescue animals affected by the hurricane.

The Fur Fun Rescue staff and volunteers have gone down to Texas and rescued nearly 50 dogs who are in need of care and ownership. They will be treating these animals, updating their vaccines, and then bringing them back to Iowa to be adopted by caring families.

Hawkeye Downs is proud to donate the needed facilities for the Fur Fun Rescue team to complete the necessary grooming on these furry friends. Our friends will be leaving Texas Wednesday morning and will be arriving at Hawkeye Downs in the late afternoon/evening this Thursday, Sept 7th. We are pleased to be a part of this worthy endeavor.

If you would like to make a donation, or are interested in adopting one of these pets, visit their website at www.furfunrescue.org or by mail at 229 Badger Rd, Lisbon, IA 52253.

RACING FOR A CAUSE TO BENEFIT C.O.P.S. THIS FRIDAY NIGHT

This Friday night is “Hibu Night at the Races” and  the annual Racing for a Cause event benefiting Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S).  The highlight of the night is a $1000 to win Regional Qualifier for Dublin City Pub INEX Legends. The special race in conjunction with C.O.P.S.  is sponsored by Hershberger Enterprises of Kalona. 25-30 Legends are expected for this race, which is the first of four throughout Iowa.

Legends Racer Warren Ropp, organizer of the special Legends race, told The Gazette earlier this week:“ It’s big because a lot of people and organizations are all about the money on their end — and you’ve got to have the money to make the doors stay open and operate — but (Hawkeye Downs) sees the big picture of what’s happening in the communities,” Ropp said. “It helps pull communities together. Whether it’s Military Night or Iowa Donor Network Night or my C.O.P.S. night, it’s big. The only way you get that message across is to keep putting it out in front of people.”

C.O.P.S. is a national organization that was organized in 1984 with 110 individual members. Their mission is “Rebuilding the shattered lives of survivors and co-workers affected by line of duty deaths, through partnerships with law enforcement and the community.” Today they have over 37,000 members.

As a special recognition for local law enforcement, C.O.P.S. and Hershberger Enterprises have teamed up with Hawkeye Downs to offer free admission to all law enforcement officers (with proper credentials) and their immediate families for Friday nights’ race.

Hibu, the evening’s sponsor, is a multinational directories and internet services company headquartered in Reading, Berkshire, UK. It has operations in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Spain.

It’s week nine of the HyVee Racing Series as the track celebrates its 92nd season of racing as part of Hawkeye Downs Speedway and Expo Center, the premiere racing and leading entertainment destination in Eastern Iowa.

In addition to the Dublin City Pub INEX Legends, Performance Concepts Late Models, Mountain Dew Sportsmen, Anderson Automotive Hobby Stocks, and Miller Time Hornets will be action.

The Lil’ Racer Car Club is back in action Friday night as well with the “Worlds Largest Candy Dash on an Asphalt track” during Intermission.  The current record is 1,049 pounds of candy. Candy Donations can be delivered to the clubhouse under the main Grandstand before the races start.

Gates open at 6pm with Opening Ceremonies slated for 7:20 and Racing at 7:30.

Hawkeye Downs will again be using RainedOut.com in 2017 to notify fans of weather related announcements for the speedway. Sign up at RainedOut.com to receive email or text alerts.
