(Cedar Rapids,IA  July 22, 2016)—Fans and racers alike endured a brutal heat index at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night but were rewarded with some hot racing to accompany the temperatures on Casey’s General Stores Wall of Fame Night.

The American Iron Racing Series joined the regular Friday night divisions of the HyVee Racing series with a dozen “Nostlagia” Cars such as Mustangs, Camaros, Fairlanes, Novas, and other classic models that were a common sight on race tracks in their heyday.

The 2016 class of the Hawkeye Downs Wall of Fame was also inducted Friday night on the front stretch during Intermission. This years’ inductees joining an already prestigious list from past years were Dick Hutcherson, Ron Hutcherson, Jim L. Brown, Tony Dean, Arnie Juhl, and Jim Wittke.

This years’ inductees were delivered to the track once again by members of the Cedar Rapids Corvette Club.

Mike Lockren and Randy Coghlan waged a spirited battle in the 12-lap AIRS feature event with Lockren leading the first three circuits around the quarter-mile. Coghlan had just taken the lead when caution slowed the action, which negated his pass. Once racing resumed Lockren and Coghlan continued their battle but Lockren was able to hold him off for the balance of the race. Brian Ashmore finished third.

Dallas Chandler racked up his sixth win of the season in the Miller Time Hornets. After a somewhat ugly first lap that saw last weeks’ winner Drew Nickell cut a tire in a three-wide squeeze play, the action settled down. Todd Ness led until three laps to go when Chandler took command after starting on the tail of the field. Lucas Foster scored his highest finish of the year, finishing third.

In Anderson Automotive Hobby Stocks, three different cars held the lead before point leader Jim Hanson took the point with five laps to go and motored to his track-high seventh win of the season. Chris Rollinger led the first six trips around the quarter-mile with Braxton Franks taking command on lap seven.  A couple laps later Hanson was on his rear bumper and after a two-lap battle Hanson powered around to take the lead.

Scott Siems made a pass on the final lap to take second from Franks, who finished third.

Things aren’t always what they appear to be and that was apparently the case as the field took the checkered flag in the 25-lap Dublin City Pub INEX Legends feature. Matt Blake had been holding off Tim Brockhouse since lap fourteen and as the field exited turn four on the final lap Blake apparently lost the handle and spun allowing Brockhouse to claim the win. The two were running very close and officials ruled there was no contact.

Austin Slabaugh was second across the stripe with point leader Kevin Korsmo finishing third. Blake recovered from his spin to finish fourth and Sammy Smith was fifth.

In Mountain Dew Sportsmen, CJ Van Horn took an early lead and never relinquished it as he picked up his first win of the season.  Co-point leader coming into the night, Jim Hanson, suffered an apparent tire issue early in the race but did make it back out.

Last week’s winner Cory Houdek edged out the other co-point leader, Greg Hentrich for the second spot. Hentrich finished third with Bob Ahrendsen and Tom Burke filling out the top of the order.

The Performance Concepts Late Model feature was an exercise in patience for eventual winner Griffin McGrath. Brian Gibson built a sizable early lead in a car that required extensive work after a spin last week but by lap five McGrath had based the second-place car of Brad Osborn and set his sights on Gibson. McGrath tried a move on lap eight but Gibson was able to power through on the high line to maintain the spot.

McGrath stayed within striking distance but couldn’t mount anothet serious charge until five laps to go when he decided to try to the the high line and he was able to make the outside pass and cruise to the win. Gibson maintained second with Osborn third. Last weeks’ winner Brody Willett finished fourth and Mark Greb was fifth.

Racing resumes next Friday night, July  29th with all divisions in action. Just four weeks remain in the 2016 season.
