Charged to Wrap Up the 2023 Season, Alburnett Young Guns Racers Host Teachers

On another beautiful late summer evening, race fans at Hawkeye Downs were treated to a great night of racing that included two photo finishes during the features and even a four-cylinder race between teachers from Alburnett.

The Alburnett Young Guns racers at Hawkeye Downs, including Reggie Mitchell, Cameron Delay, Beckett Flannagan, and Jacob Tiegan, hosted their fans from Alburnett Community Schools at the racers on Friday.

The purple and gold packed the stands to help cheer on the teacher race! Three educators from Alburnett jumped in the Iowa BIG cars.

They put on an awesome performance on the track. Thank you to Givey’s Place for the gift certificates and the John’s Tree Service for sponsoring the trophies to make recognize each of the racers.

In the Cassill Motors Sport Mods, Tallan Chandler led the race early on with the rest of the field fighting for several laps behind. As they sorted themselves out, Patrick Flannagan worked his way to second and then grabbed the lead with Chandler then having an issue causing him to slow and make contact with Jonny Williams. Chandler would get back to second at the end, with Flannagan getting the win. Flannagan enters the final race 31 points ahead of Williams.

The Anderson Automotive Hobby Stocks had an exciting finish once again this year! Jason Sherman and Scott Siems began the race in a fierce battle to start. With five laps to go, Adam Petrzelka took over the lead but Reggie Mitchell caught up and began to work the outside. On the final lap coming out of turn four, Petrzelka pushed up the track and Mitchell edged for the victory. Derek Parrott has a three point advantage over Reggie Mitchell heading into the championship.

After a couple year drought, Kevin Korsmo earned his third win of the year in the Legends.Direct Legends by taking the lead after a restart with 10 to go. Jeremiah Davis led up until that point and ended in 4th place. Austin Slabaugh and Kacey Korsmo rounded out the podium. Kacey Korsmo leads Slabaugh by 10 points heading into next week.

The Performance Foods Sportsman had an early yellow with Jacob Tiegen and WIll Zamastil battling for the lead, Zamastil went spinning. Tiegen would take the lead but then get passed by Todd Ness a few laps later. Ness would go on to win the race with Tiegen second and Hanson third, but Tiegen would be disqualified post-race due to a technical infraction. Hanson leads Ness by four points ahead of the final night.

The Sunline Hornets put on another fantastic race with yet again a tight photo finish at the end. Vozenilek snagged the lead four laps in and looked to have them covered but a caution for a car stopped on the backstretch bunched up the field. Korey Lana was fast on the restart, but Vozenilek got back ahead with Corey Crispin charging to the outside. On the final lap, Crispin used the momentum to be ahead at the line by 0.03 seconds. Crispin has a 22 point lead on Vozenilek with one race left.

The Kings Enterprises Late Models finished off the night with Bryce Miller starting 5th and working his way up to take the lead on lap seven. He held ahead of Kacey Korsmo just enough to win his third race of the season. Miller now has a four point lead over Korsmo heading into the championship race.
