Friday Nights Lights: Hanson Snags Sportsman W, Chandler Scores Enduro Sprint Series Win

The last weekly race for the month of June took place on Friday, June 23rd. With June 30th as an off-week for racing at Hawkeye Downs, the Friday night wins will lead into the mid-season break. July 7th will kick off the second-half of the season with the Mid-Season Championship Night.

Cassill Motors night at the races didn’t disappoint with perfect summer weather, cold ice cream, hot racecars, and impressive showings from our weekly racing classes and the Enduro Sprint Series!

After being close each race so far this season, Chad Vozenilek was able to get it done in the Sunline Hornets for the win. Vozenilek moved up two spots from where he started en route to the win, beating out Ian Pate for the top spot.

In the Anderson Automotive Hobby Stocks, Reggie Mitchell had the speed to get another feature win on the year. Mitchell ended the race with just over a one-second gap on Adam Petrzelka.

Jim Hanson narrowly beat Jacob Tiegen for the Performance Foods Sportsman feature win, with the margin of victory: 0.034. It was the first win for Hanson since the end of May and his third of the season.

The Cassill Motors Sport Mods had another night where getting to the finish was the biggest challenge. Last week's winner, Bryan Baxter, suffered an engine failure along with three others that did not finish. Patrick Flannagan set sail and ran away from Chad Siems to capture the win.

In the Legends.Direct Legends class, Kacey Korsmo started sixth and worked his way to the lead. Korsmo outpaced Michael Weber to earn his first win of the season. Kevin Korsmo kept his string of good finishes going with a third-place finish.

Rounding out the evening was the Interstate Power Systems Enduro Sprint presented by Mt Vernon Tire and Marion Tire. Nathan Chandler drew the pole for the race and walked away from the rest of the field, including Corey Crispin who finished second.

There are no weekly races on Friday, June 30th. Be sure to join us for Mid-Season Championship Night on Friday, July 7th!  All five weekly racing classes, the late models, and the AIRS Vintage Series will be racing. Gates open at 6pm and racing begins at 7pm following opening ceremonies.

We’re excited to host an autograph session before the races on July 7th along the front stretch! After the races, we’ll also host an after-party at the Tavern on the Mall behind the grandstand. Be sure to get all of the information on Facebook as we race into the second half of the season.
