Hawkeye Downs Spotted at RoughRiders Guns & Hoses night
On January 13th, the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders hosted "Guns & Hoses Night" at the Stable against the Madison Capitols. This annual event is a fundraiser for the Cedar Rapids Police Department and Cedar Rapids Fire Department Honor Guard Units. It includes a military jersey auction and a competition between the departments on the ice. CRPD Officer David Zahn was memorialized at the game as he was a long-time supporter of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders organization.
Our Hawkeye Downs Race Director, Brian Gibson, was amongst the thousands in attendance.
“CRFD and CRPD Honor Guards have been afforded a unique opportunity from the Cedar Rapids Roughriders to have a night of hockey tabbed Guns and Hoses Night to raise money for both honor guards,” says Gibson. “The money is used to help offset costs for training and other operation expenses. It provides some friendly competition of a shoot out on the ice for the bronze nozzle trophy and bragging rights for the next year. Our two departments work hand-in-hand daily to help keep our citizens safe. This event allows us to get together with our families off-duty and have some fun.”
Throughout the evening, attendees may have noticed the zamboni resurfacing the ice had a special look to it. Cassill Motors in Cedar Rapids designed the zamboni with their late model race car and the Hawkeye Downs logo to show support between the organizations.
“As public safety agencies of the city, it is important to lead by example, “ shares Gibson. “This is accomplished by showing that the city supports its local sports organizations by being actively involved in their events. Sporting organizations bring visitors to our city which helps our local businesses revenue.”
