July 21st Racing Recap: Fast Cars, Free Bikes & Four Races left in the Season

As the season winds down, the championship battles heat up. Only four races remain and each race is more important from here out. On Friday, July 21st, the competitive action continued on CRST night at the races.

In the Sunline Hornets, the field wasted no time going four wide, with Ian Pate coming out of the pack ahead of Jay Crabill. With six to go, Corey Crispin moved to the second position and was all over the bumper of Pate, eventually getting to the outside on the final lap. Crispin lost the race to Pate by .022. Chad Vozenilek suffered an engine failure and did not make the feature but expects to be back this week.

“I didn’t see much of them,” Pate said. “One of the keys is just protecting that low groove and keep digging.”

Dave Ballstaedt led the first lap of the Performance Foods Sportsman class, but had to succumb to Jim Hanson the following lap. Hanson continued to lead while Todd Ness worked his way through the field, taking second with seven laps left in the event. Unfortunately for Ness, time ran out and Hanson captured the victory.

It looked to be just about anyone's race in the Anderson Automotive Hobby Stocks, with Adam Petrzelka leading over Reggie Mitchell early on. Mitchell pulled him in, battling hard and patiently on the outside, until Petrzelka got in the grass and gave Mitchell the advantage. On a late race restart from a single car spin, Mitchell held on for the win with Derek Parrott snagging second place.

The inside groove remained dominant in the Legends.Direct Legends. Adam Reed had a great start and led until he pushed up the track allowing Nick Slabaugh to take over. With 14 to go, Slabaugh did the same and let Kevin Korsmo grab the top spot, bringing his son, Kacey, with him. For several laps Kacey took a couple glances and finally made the move when Kevin slipped a little. Kevin got freight-trained and slipped back to 6th with Kacey Korsmo winning the event.

Action from the Cassill Motors Sport Mods continued right where they left off last week with early contact between Patrick Flannagan and Tallan Chandler in turn 3. Jonny Williams took the lead on the restart, and paced the field until the very end, when he was outdueled by Flannagan. It was a turn around for Williams, who has equally struggled and had rough luck this season, coming up just a bit short. Chandler slowed with 12 to go and retired to the pits, getting credited for 7th.

The fans were also treated to a great battle at the end of the evening in the Interstate Power Systems Enduro Sprint powered by Mt Vernon Road Tire and Marion Tire Company. Justin Kacena had the lead for a lap before Jeremy Cassill took his turn. Shortly after, Zach Sedlacek grabbed the top spot with Corey Crispin on his tail. With 16 to go, the two made contact, Sedlacek had a big save and Crispin went to the lead.

As Crispin worked through lapped traffic, Sedlacek slowly came back into the picture and made a divebomb move with two laps to go. Crispin rebounded and pushed Sedlacek up the track, which allowed Crispin to bring his car to victory lane.

“I think we’ve done a lot of damage to our cars the past three Sprints,” Crispin said. “But we are still friends and we had a good race.”
