Meet The Team: Jennifer Lawrence

The Smile Behind The ‘Downs

Jennifer Lawrence has lived her entire life in Cedar Rapids. Some may call her Jen, and many recognize her as a friend - or perhaps even family. Family is what means the most to her. Jen and her partner of 22 years are proud residents of the City of Five Seasons with a son and two daughters, six grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, and too many nieces and nephews to list out.

“My parents live close by, and my sister lives in Cedar Rapids as well,” Lawrence shares. “My heart belongs to all of my family.”

She has a heart of gold that reaches beyond just her family. Lawrence shares her heart with everyone who meets her.

After 25 years in business, she closed her childcare when COVID-19 hit. She has watched many individuals and families grow up in the community in the last nearly three decades. In the fall of 2021, she was offered a part-time office assistant position at Hawkeye Downs. Just over a year later, she transitioned into the Executive Director role. Her passion for people, excellent time management skills, and focus on keeping things moving upward and onward have made her very successful in her role as a leader at Hawkeye Downs.

Lawrence shares that there is so much to understand within an organization that revolves around an entertainment space AND racetrack. There have been many positive changes at Hawkeye Downs within the last few years - and she has learned all there is to know very quickly. Her creative ideas, quick thinking, and strategic business skills have allowed her to thrive in her role and help lead Hawkeye Downs in a thrilling direction as we approach the 100th year of racing in 2025.

“At times, like with any leadership role, it can be challenging with so many moving parts,” she explains. “I have enjoyed the experience so far, and I continue to learn something new every day.”

For Lawrence, there is a lot to look forward to coming to work at Hawkeye Downs. If you ask her, she’ll tell you that it's all about the staff, fans, sponsors, and volunteers who support Hawkeye Downs.

“Working with all of the people who have had a role in creating and managing this organization has been my favorite part,” shares Lawrence. “I’m thankful for everyone who has welcomed me to Hawkeye Downs and allowed me to be a part of the team.”

Outside of Hawkeye Downs, Lawrence enjoys relaxing with her family and dogs, visiting new places, writing, and thrift store shopping. Even with her sunny personality, she is interested in researching the paranormal as a paranormal investigator.

“Most people would be surprised to find out I enjoy hanging out in dark, abandoned buildings and creepy locations,” she says with a laugh. If there’s something strange in the neighborhood, we know who to call!

What Can Guests Look Forward to at Hawkeye Downs?

There’s always something fun happening at Hawkeye Downs. Lawrence is excited for weekly racing to start, but she says there’s more to be excited about than just racing season.

“There are many improvements happening to the facilities and grounds at Hawkeye Downs,” explains Lawrence. “From the racetrack being NASCAR-sanctioned to the addition of many new events this year!”

You can find a complete list of upcoming events on the Events Calendar or follow Hawkeye Downs on Facebook.

Jen, you are the heart and brains of our operations. Your time and talents shared with Hawkeye Downs are appreciated more than words can express. Thank you for all you do!
