Santa Village Sensory Night
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a “sensory-friendly” event mean?
ChildServe explains, “Sensory refers to any of the senses (i.e., sight, sound, taste, touch, smell). Sensory-friendly refers to the idea of creating an experience or environment that is less intense or extreme in relation to the senses. For example, decreasing sounds, motion or lights to create a calmer environment. Modifications can be made for all of the senses as well. Individuals with a sensory processing disorder may become overwhelmed by an atmosphere that others would find fun and exciting. Sensory-friendly programming can help provide an inclusive environment for individuals with autism spectrum disorder or sensory processing disorder to join in on all of the event’s fun!”

Sensory-friendly night at Hawkeye Downs Santa Village, supported by Basepoint Wealth, will be hosted from 6:00pm to 9:00pm on Thursday, December 5th, 2024, at Hawkeye Downs Speedway & Expo Center at 4400 6th St SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52404.
How much does this event cost?
Admission to Santa Village is free. No registration or ticket is required. There are restrooms on the opposite side of the building from where you will enter. Both restrooms have bright lighting, multiple sinks, automatic hand towel dispensers, and multiple oversized stalls for handicap accessibility.
What food options are available?
Hawkeye Downs staff will serve hot chocolate, cookies, candy, chips, soda, water, beer, and other warm snacks in the concessions area.
Will there be any lines for activities?

What seating is available?
There is a variety of seating options, including couches and chairs in Mrs. Claus’ Cozy Corner and folding chairs and tables in concessions and the coloring and craft area.
Will there be a calming space at this event?
On Thursday, December 5th, a dedicated calming space will be available and staffed by ChildServe therapists. If an individual gets overstimulated at the event, this space will provide families with a safe space to take a break. Activities are in place for individuals who need relief from the event’s stimulating environment as well as those who need to release energy to regulate their bodies.
